    Stay Fit in Boulder, Colorado

Boulder, Colorado is consistently rated as one of the most physically fit cities in the United States and it’s no wonder. Boulder is a complete fitness and health mecca. No matter where you live in Boulder, there is a gym, health club, and/or recreation center within walking distance.   You also can’t forget that Boulder has some of the most healthy and amazing options for dining out that I have seen in any other city I have visited in the world.(DINING BLOG SOON TO COME)

Professional athletes from all over the world, flock to Boulder to take advantage of the “high altitude” training and it’s fitness friendly environment.  With hundreds of miles of hiking and running trails, some of the most famous rock climbing in the world, and about a dozen ski resorts

within 4 hours drive from Boulder, there is never a shortage of physical activities to do.  It is not rare for someone to run, swim laps, go to martial arts, and then do a yoga class all in the same day.  I even know people who only workout.  That’s it.  No job, no need to do anything, so they just jump around town all day, finding different ways to tone their bodies.  On Saturdays around town, you will see coffee shops lined with road bicycles and hundreds of cyclists cruising around in their helmets and bike shorts, clicking by with their goofy cycling shoes, thinking they own the town.  And you know what, a handful of them probably do own the town.  They are many of Boulder most “elite” and they have no qualms about letting you know it.

I have a friend who moved to Boulder from the east coast and says that since he moved here 8 months ago, he has lost 15 pounds.  He recently went back home and noticed just how unfit everyone was back home.  There are no good restaurants.  Mostly the usual chains.  Nobody is into exercising or even considers what they are putting into their systems when they eat drive-thru fast food three meals a day.  He said when he came back to Boulder he felt an immediate sense of guilt for having been such a bum back home and then went straight back to the gym.  He said when he got back to Boulder and saw all of the people out hiking and running and riding their bikes, he felt he had to keep up.  He is a single man and wants to meet some nice members of the opposite sex, but says that he feels he has to work out to stay up with the rest of the town.  Some people might consider this to be a bad thing, but I think it’s great that a whole city can be motivation to get off the couch and do something physical.  Not only will you look better, but you will feel better and have the opportunity to live a longer more fulfilling life and will hopefully take less trips to the doctors office.

For those of you wanting to get in shape, but are having trouble motivating, all you need to do is move to Boulder.  With the beautiful mountains and almost everyday being a sunny one, there is no excuse not to get out there and take full advantage of everything Colorado has to offer.  I hope to bump into you on Mt. Sanitas Trail someday.
