Boulder Colorado Celebrates 150 years!

150yrs1For it’s sesquicentennial birthday, Boulder Colorado is literally “ringing in” its big day.  According to The Boulder Daily Camera, the city of Boulder is invited to meet downtown near the Boulder County Courthouse by noon, bells in hand to ring one time for each of Boulder’s 150 years.  The event happens this Tuesday and the group bell-ringing is expected to last about 15 minutes.  It will be followed by  the carillons of four buildings around town.

These include Macky Auditorium, St. Johns Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, and St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church.

The Official Boulder Sesquicentennial website explains that several school groups will be participating as well.  These include Watershed Middle School, and Friends’ School with students ringing bells at their schoolhouse at 5465 Pennslyvania; and Whitier Elementary, which has its own bell tower.   The Hotel Boulderado celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009 and is hosting a reception for longstanding Boulder residents on February 10, 2009 (the offical day the Boulder City Town Company first met, founding the government of the City of Boulder).  A special recognition of this anniversary will be held at the Boulder City Council meeting that night.

The special event goes on through the year.  The focus of the community celebration of the sesquicentennial will be on the 4th of July, 2009.  A community walk will link together some of Boulder’s most special historic properties leading participants to the fireworks at Folsom Field.  The Sesquicentennial Stroll will take participants from Chautauqua to the Columbia Cemetery to the Boulder History Museum to the Bandshell to CU Heritage Center to the fireworks and community celebration at Folsom Field, enjoying a community event and appreciating our local history.

About Boulder Colorado’s History… Boulder was settled in 1858 as a mining community; it was reached by railroad in 1873.  Specifically, In 1958, gold was discovered in Dry Creek, stimulating the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, as a result, the first permanent Anglo-European Settlers arrived at mouth of Boulder Canyon.  The Boulder History Museum explains that Boulder City Town Company formed itself the 10th of February 1859. The first schoolhouse in Colorado built strictly for educational purposes was erected in Boulder on the southwest corner of 14th and Front (Walnut).  And in 1877, the University of Colorado opened.
